Crash Preventability Review: The First Questions to Ask
Crash reportability and crash preventability are different questions. A carrier should verify the record, preserve the evidence, and determine whether the event fits a current review category before preparing a request.
Is the crash record accurate?
Confirm the carrier, vehicle, date, location, report number, injuries, tow-away information, and other source details. Record errors should be identified precisely before preventability is addressed.
What evidence exists now?
Police reports, video, photographs, diagrams, witness information, citations, electronic data, and dispatch records can become harder to obtain with time. Preserve them before deciding how strong the case may be.
Does the event fit a review category?
FMCSA controls the program categories and final determination. A strong submission connects the event facts to an eligible category without overstating what the evidence proves.
